Dear ASD Community:
The purpose of this letter is to notify you that a staff member from GCEC has tested positive for COVID-19. The affected person has been instructed to remain home and quarantine for 14 days. Anyone who is considered a “close contact” with this person has been contacted by school or local health officials and provided with instructions on the appropriate steps to take.

Our contact tracing has identified several staff that had direct contact with the positive case. In response to this large group of staff having direct contact, we will be moving to full remote learning starting (Monday, November 16) for the whole school (both PACES and CORE) until after Thanksgiving. We will make immediate arrangements to deliver devices to any student that does not have their chromebook with them so that they can participate in remote learning.

We are closely monitoring this situation and working with the West Hartford/Bloomfield Department of Public Health and will provide you with updates as we know more. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at paula.morabito@asd-1817.org.

Sincerely,
Paula Morabito
Director of Education

                                 February 2020
    Dear ASD Seniors:

In 1998, ASD received a generous gift from Althea Monte, an ASD alumna of 1929. This gift provides scholarship funds to ASD students for post-secondary education. We encourage eligible seniors to apply.

A completed application with required documents must be received by March 31. The ASD scholarship committee will review applications and announce the winner (s) at the ASD awards program in June 2020.

One or two ASD seniors will receive up to $7,500 - $15,000 per year (total four years) for their college education. This scholarship will expire after four years.

Funds will be sent directly to the recipient’s post-secondary institution when written acceptance from the institution is received by ASD.

Students must be a full-time ASD student during their senior year to qualify. Preference will be given to applicants with financial need.

  • Investigation Findings

In February 2019, the American School for the Deaf (ASD) learned about allegations made by school alumni of inappropriate conduct by former faculty members.  Upon learning of these allegations, ASD immediately contacted the proper authorities and retained outside legal counsel to conduct an independent, objective and confidential investigation.  ASD values your trust and deeply appreciate your significant contributions to the our community over the years, and I would like to share with you the results of the investigation here.

A V-log summarizing the findings of the investigation may also be found here.

The health, safety and well-being of our students is our highest priority and we assure you that we are committed to ensuring the actions detailed in the attached document are never repeated.  Please contact Jeffrey S. Bravin should you have any questions.

    Jeffrey S. Bravin
    Executive Director
