Support the school

Happy Kindergarten GraduatesLike non-profit organizations everywhere, the American School for the Deaf (ASD) depends upon contributed income. Following are a few of the many ways gifts and contributions enhance the lives and educational experiences of our students:

  • High-school students are taking college-level science courses at the University of Connecticut, part of the Classroom of the Sea Program. This ground-breaking advanced academic and research program has led to the development of new signs for sophisticated technical terms in Oceanography.
  • The statewide Early Childhood Services offers indispensible language and communication development essential for the subsequent achievement of deaf preschoolers.
  • Children's audiological, diagnostic and testing devices are evaluated.
  • Art and drama programs have traditionally enriched our student's lives and captivated audiences through the beautiful and expressive quality of sign language.
  • Camp Isola Bella provides an enlightening and enjoyable summer experience for deaf and hard of hearing kids 6-17.
  • The French Exchange Program offers ASD students the opportunity to visit the world-famous National Institute for Deaf Youth in Paris, or to host their friends from France here at the school in alternate years.
  • The school's priceless collection of historic artifacts are being preserved and made more accessible to students, the public and scholars. These archives are one of the nation's most important collections of information on the history of deaf education and special education in the U.S.

Planned Gifts
Planned gifts provide an opportunity for the donor and the Development staff to work together in developing mutually beneficial strategic plan for charitable giving. To learn more about planned giving, visit the website of Leave a Legacy. To learn more about leaving a bequest to ASD, contact Marilyn Rettig.

ASD and its donors are truly partners. The school's mission, the donors' investments, and the remarkable efforts by ASD's extraordinary young people, have together enriched all our lives and our communities.

ASD is a private, non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization. Contributions are tax deductible. The school receives an annual appropriation from the Connecticut General Assembly (the legislature) which covers approximately 37 percent of annual operating costs of $20 million. No tuition is charged to students or families, towns or regional education districts for in-state students in the regular program. The balance of ASD's costs are covered by various sources, including fees for special services from local school districts, out-of-state tuitions paid by referring states or school districts, rental income, endowment earnings and contributions.
