The American School for the Deaf (ASD) is located on a 54 acre campus in West Hartford, Connecticut. It is a residential and day program operating as a state-aided private school. It was established in 1817 as the first permanent school for the deaf in America. The current service load is approximately 215. The program is a comprehensive center-based and community-based educational program serving deaf and hard-of-hearing students from preschool through high school, and adult service program, utilizing a total communication philosophy. The American School for the Deaf is accredited by the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs Serving the Deaf and the Departments of Education in Connecticut and Massachusetts.
SCOPE OF DUTIES
Under the supervision of the Director of the Student Health Center and the Student Health Center Medical Director, provides nursing care to students and staff.
SCHEDULE
Friday: 1 pm-8 pm, Saturday/Sunday: 8 am – 8 pm, 31 hours per month
PRIMARY DUTIES
Under the supervision of the Director of the Student Health Center:
(a) Responsible for medication rounds and charting.
(b) Responsible for medications and charting.
(c) Assists during Clinic hours with Medical Director.
(d) Treats emergencies as they occur, charting and paperwork required.
(e) Care of in-patients’ – temperatures, medications, nursing care, signal lights, notification of parents. Makes units on discharge patients – Charting on Infirmary Records. Discharge Summary to Registrar.
(f) Puts clean linen away and tabulates dirty linen for pick-up.
(g) Responsible for sharing yearly heights, weights and vision testing on students and charting same. Also notification of parents in regard to eye problems. Responsible for PPD tests and paperwork.
(h) Preparation of meals for in-patients.
(i) R.C. Security phone checks and logging calls.
(j) Assists with filing of reports.
(k) Gives reports to on-coming Nurse and counts narcotics at beginning and end of shift.
(l) Serves as a member of the SHC Team: attends in-service and department meetings.
(m) Other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Applicant must possess a current Connecticut License as a Registered Nurse and be CPR certified. Ability to use sign language or willingness to learn. Applicant must possess a driver’s license. Ability to function independently following standing orders and procedures.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
