On Tuesday, March 12th ASD students visited the CT Science Center to visit the Journey of You exhibit. There were many different stations for the students to see their fingerprints, compare themselves to others, and view themselves as they age if they don't eat healthy or if they smoke! We had plenty of time to visit the other exhibits too and we had fun with the "mind challenge!" Robby especially enjoyed the "build your own bike" station. A great time was had by all!

December 6th was an extremely special day for our students in the elementary school. The WestFarms Management team invited our students to visit WestFarms for a very special event with Signing Santa and a sneak peak at IceAge 2 (with interpreter instead of captions). Each student had a chance to visit and tell (sign) Santa their wish list and photo, get their faces painted, special lunch and do some arts and crafts. It was an amazing experience and what a wonderful gift from WestFarms. At the end of their visit, they each received a special backpack and certificate and each will receive their very own DVD when it is released on December 11. Thank you to Signing Santa who spent the rest of the day (until 8:00 p.m.) with other deaf children who visited WestFarms on this special Signing Santa day!

If star power can help a cause, the American School for the Deaf is off to a good start when it comes to raising money for its new building project at its West Hartford campus.

Headed by honorary chair, Liam McGee, board chair, president and CEO of The Hartford, the school’s Foundations for the Future Campaign is seeking to raise millions to help offset costs for the new project that will mean a new school building and additional services for hearing impaired students.

“The American School for the Deaf is a great asset that does wonderful work,” said McGee, who hosted the reception at The Hartford for a select group of guests that included Farmington  Bank chairman, president, CEO and campaign chair John Patrick,  Cigna president David Cordani, Attorney General George Jepsen, First Lady Cathy Malloy, Douglas Hyland of the New Britain Museum of American Art and Jennifer Holmes of the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving.

“The school is a wonderful part of our community,” he said noting the location where The Hartford building is located now, was the original site of the 200-year-old school. The site is marked by the “Alice” statue, a rendering of the school’s first student, Alice Cogswell, who was the daughter of Mason Fitch Cogswell, one of the school founders.

Special guest at the reception hosted by McGee was Rebecca “Bex” Freund, great-granddaughter of the famed, late G. Fox & Co. head, Beatrice Fox Auerbach, who was on the school board of directors.

“I’m a little bit nervous about speaking at this,” said Freund, who is deaf and uses a translator. “But I think my great-grandmother would be very proud,” added Freund, whose grandmother, Georgette Koopman and her mother, Beatrice “Trice” Fox Koopman also served on the ASD board.

The building plan calls for razing the stately, brick Galludet Hall, sorely in need of expensive renovations that make saving the building prohibitive.

But the bricks will go on.

The school’s Executive Director Edward Peltier said staff, alumni and supporters are talking about different ways to repurpose the bricks so they are still part of the new look on the campus.

The American School for the Deaf soccer team won the New England School for the Deaf Tournament against The Learning Center. Christopher Ramaza scored in the last ten seconds to tie the game 3-3. There were two overtimes and ASD won in penalty shots for a 4-3 victory. Curtis Hayward, head coach, was very proud of his team who fought hard and did not quit. The season ended with a record of 5-7-1.

On Wednesday, October 3rd, several High School English classes and their teachers visited Trinity College to witness the creation of a sand mandala by the nuns of the Keydong Monastery in Tibet. The Keydong nuns are among the first Tibetan women monastics to learn this sacred art practice.  The mandala took one month to create and was made with colored sand which the nuns brought from Nepal.  The nuns collect nuggets of white marble that they crush, wash, and dry in the sun. The sand is divided and dyed in five colors-red, blue, yellow, green, and white-representing the five "Buddha families," which contain multiple levels of meaning.

Students watched as the women worked on the mandala and then had the opportunity to try some of the tools that are used.  They were also invited to sit in the meditation area with some of the nuns and to make prayer flags.  Students learned that once the mandala is complete, it is dismantled, scooped up into jars and dispersed into the Connecticut River.  This symbolizes the Buddhist belief in the impermanence of life.  The students asked many good questions and learned about Buddhist belief and practice.  This tied into their unit of study on how our beliefs influence our actions.  Many students then made their own mandalas when they returned back to ASD. Teachers who also participated were Gail McCormack, Cindy Lindenberger, Donna Wilson, Anna Andrews.

The weather was spectacular for an outstanding Homecoming last Saturday, October 20th. On Friday night, ASD hosted 50 alumni at Isola Bella for a nice social event. There was also an opportunity to speak with a small group of alums about the new building, the proposed demolition of Gallaudet Hall etc.

In addition to the annual parade of classes, there were sports events with soccer and volleyball (very exciting triumphs for both teams); the boys soccer team played their consolation round against Fanwood in the Metro Tournament and ended in a shoot out with a total of three rounds of five shooting out for third place! ASD won on the very last kick!!

Parent Chris Winebarger called ASD and asked if there was a chance LifeStar could visit on one of their educational "explorations" and it was overwhelmingly received. Chris' two children, Dylan and Gabby Levesque attend the school and were delighted to see their Dad land on our soccer field Thursday morning. Chris, a flight nurse and fluid signer, welcomed all the ASD students onto the field (after securing the helicopter) for questions and a chance to see the inside of the helicopter. Many of our students asked great questions of the pilot and of Chris...like how much does it cost to run the helicopter and how serious are the injuries or which hospital do they take the patients to?

We are very appreciative for this opportunity and thank Chris and the entire flight crew for making a stop at ASD!

Hartford Symphony Visits ASD

The Instrument Zoo from the Hartford Symphony Orchestra paid us a visit on October 20. It was funded by mini grant from the Communication

Department. The Instrument Zoos gives students opportunities to discover the mechanics and sounds of the instruments of the orchestra in a hands-on musical laboratory. There were two sessions for the elementary students and another session for the high school students.

Thanks to Alyssa Pecorino for handling all the scheduling and all the staff and high school students who helped out.

The Hartford Symphony's Education Department sent Arlene Blum a note after this visit:

On behalf of the Education Department and the entire Hartford Symphony Orchestra, I am writing to say thank you for allowing us to be part of the students' experience at ASD today! For the short time that we were there, it was an absolutely fantastic experience to see the students so interested and engaged. Also, my colleague, Sarah, and I both commented on the culture of care and camaraderie we saw among the students and staff. From the help of high school students to the affection shown to staff members, the caring nature of the community was completely evident. By all means, please feel free to share these words of thanks and praise with students and staff alike.

Once again, thank you so much for allowing the HSO to visit and share with the community at ASD. I can say that I was personally moved and inspired, and it was the perfect way to start the day.

Best regards,

Jeff Martin
