Elementary School
The Mason Fitch Cogswell Elementary School offers comprehensive, multilevel, educational programming, with a focus on language
development, serving deaf and hard of hearing students from Preschool through
Grade Six. Our goal is to cultivate effective language and communication skills
and nurture a lifelong love of learning in every student. Students receive
highly individualized instruction in small classes taught by state certified
professionals.

After School Programs and Extracurricular Activities
After-school enrichment programs supplement the Elementary
School program. Day students are eligible and encouraged to participate. Based
on each student's individualized program plan, the following after-school
activities are available:

Mainstreaming Opportunities
Elementary School students may participate in partial
mainstreaming in area public/private schools with professional staff support by
ASD. This decision is made during the
PPT. Space is limited.
Extensive Resources and Support Services
The Elementary School program is supported by professional
staff with specialized training in the areas of school counseling, social work,
school psychology, learning disabilities, speech and language specialists,
audiology, physical therapy and occupational therapy. Over 90% of the ASD
faculty and professional staff have earned masters degrees or above. 100% are Connecticut
certified teachers. Services available to students include:
- Educational
testing (both those designed for deaf students and state-mandated
tests)
- Integrated
IEP planning and service provision
- Personal
and/or group counseling
- Physical
Therapy and Occupational Therapy services
- Speech,
language, and Aural Habilitation communication services (individual and
group)
- Pre-vocational
education program (life skills in conjunction with functional academics)
Assessments are completed periodically in the following
areas:

Assistive Devices and Support
- Amplification
systems (individual FM's for hearing aids and cochlear implants and loaner personal hearing aids are available
to all students)
