Community Sign Language Classes: Schedule for 2008-2009 Classes XML feed

American School for the Deaf (ASD) has been offering non-credit community American Sign Language (ASL) classes for more than 30 years. Fall, winter, and spring sessions meet once a week for eight weeks; summer session meets twice weekly for four weeks. Community Sign Language classes are excellent preparation for college-level ASL.

Students use the text, A Basic Course in American Sign Language (ABC), as well as a variety of resources designed to support the goals of the class. Because ASL is a visual-gestural language, students learn best in the context of communicative activities. As they progress, students develop and practice expressive and receptive skills through group practice, exercises and dialogues.

Learning any language requires time and practice, but you will be surprised by how quickly you will begin to use and build on your new knowledge. Whether you are taking ASL to communicate with a friend, family member or colleague, or simply because you wish to learn, you will discover a supportive, enthusiastic community of teachers and learners at ASD. We hope you will join us!

Following the ABC text, class sections are divided as follows:
  Basic ASL I: Chapters 1-6
Basic ASL II: Chapters 7-14
Basic ASL III: Chapters 15-22
If you are unsure which class is appropriate for you, please contact Sign Language Services at the number below.
Registration fee: $125 Textbook fee: $35
Classes meet from 6:30 pm-8:30 pm
  • Please note: No refunds or credits will be issued after the first week of class unless the class is cancelled by the instructor.
  • All fees must be received prior to the first class.
  • Students must be 16 to register for classes.
  • Textbooks are not available prior to the first class--they will be distributed at the first class meeting.
  • You will be notified if class is cancelled.
