Educational and Technical Assistance |

A variety of educational and technical assistance is provided to local school districts throughout the state of Connecticut. Coordinator of Outreach Education responds to school requests for assistance with the development of an appropriate Individual Education Plan, or I.E.P. This can be supported by a teacher of the deaf, an educational consultant, psychologist or counselor, audiologist, cochlear implant specialist, sign language instructor, and/or vocational specialist. Services are reviewed on a regular basis and modifications of programs are part of the process provided by a highly qualified staff trained in the field of deafness.

Teacher of the Deaf Services |

- Assists classroom teachers, including art, physical education and computer science teachers, in proper seating arrangements, visual orientation for presentation of instruction and use of auditory equipment.
- Sets up equipment, does listening checks and orients student to the activities of the day.
- Provides reading instruction and language support.
- Pre-teaches and re-teaches when challenging new material is presented
- Facilitates interaction between hearing and deaf/hard of hearing students
- Provides assistance for accessing information via sign or oral support and/or classroom captioning during instruction.
- Provides clarification and repletion of instructions through visual cues and modeling of instruction.
- Post-teaching of subject area skills.
- Facilitates conversation and social problem solving.
- Collaborates with classroom teacher in meeting I.E.P. goals and conducting annual assessments.

Supervision for Teachers of the Deaf is provided to local school districts along with program planning at the annual PPT.
Educational Consultant Services
An Educational Consultant observes the deaf/hard of hearing student in the classroom and makes recommendations for programming. Consulting services may include, but are not limited to:
- Regular visits to the classroom to provide support to the classroom teacher, either monthly or bi-monthly.
- Assistance coordinating services within the public school program.
- Provision of resources to enhance the delivery of services.
- Attendance at PPT meetings to assist in recommendations for programming and/or refinement of the services presently available.

Workshops, Training and Seminars for Teachers and Staff
In-service training is offered on topics that support deaf and hard of hearing students’ needs, including:
- Autism and the deaf child
- Behavior modification
- Cochlear implants
- Language development
- Literacy
- Audiology and equipment
- Aural habilitation
- Sign language
- Syndromes commonly associated with hearing loss
- Health issues
Specially designed workshops may also be requested.

Annual Conferences
Each year an annual conference is sponsored by ASD’s Outreach and Support Services. The focus is on providing information to teachers and other professionals working with deaf and hard of hearing children, as well as creating an opportunity for networking for those who attend.

Specially Designed Technical Assistance Program for Teachers and Staff |
Educational and technical assistance professionals are also available to assist local school districts/programs by providing:
- Distance learning opportunities to connect public school programs and ASD
- Access and resources to instructional materials and software
- State of the art technology and advice from our Information Technology Services in support of subject area instruction.

ASD also offers training for professionals, paraprofessionals, support staff and parents from local programs.
